Approved driving instructor (ADI) course
Train to be a driving instructor and start a rewarding career
You’re required to pass three tests as part of our approved driving instructor (ADI) course.
- Theory test & hazard perception test (ADI part 1)
- Driving ability test (ADI part 2)
- Instructional ability test (ADI part 3)
You’re required to pass a multiple choice question based on the highway code, traffic signs, driving essential skills, theory test for approved driving instructors, driving instructors handbook.
You’re also required to pass a hazard perception test.
There are 5 parts to the approved driving instructor (ADI) part 2 test:
- An eyesight check
- ‘Show me, tell me’ vehicle safety questions
- General driving ability
- Manoeuvres
- Independent driving
A driver and vehicle standards agency examiner will watch you give a client-centred driving lesson lasting about an hour to one of your pupils.
The examiner will look for evidence that you meet the national standard for driver and rider training.
The approved driving instructor (ADI) standards check assesses your ability to teach pupils.
You have to take at least one ADI standards check during each 4-year period that you’re registered as an ADI.
You have to take a standards check even if you do not have a car or are not working as an ADI.
